Goin’ Postal Outlasts Hoffner’s

SEBRING- It was a slugfest of epic proportions in Tuesday’s Dixie Boys (ages 13-14) baseball game between Goin’ Postal and Hoffner’s.  Seven innings weren’t enough to determine a victor, and by the time the dust settled Goin' Postal had notched a 16-15 win.

The game was scoreless through one inning of plat before the runs began adding up in a hurry.  Hoffner’s jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when James Heston, Alex Griffin and Nate Greene singled in succession.  The lead ballooned to six with a four-run third, as Steven Dunn, Garrett Faircloth, Griffin and Greene all came around to score after reaching base.

Goin' Postal refused to mail it in and sliced the deficit in half with a three-run burst in the fourth.  Tony DeJongh singled and scored, Cameron Willey walked and came across the plate and Felix Basulto scored after a base hit to pull Postal within 6-3.  The visitors took the lead in the fifth with five more runs, with Willey’s two-run triple being the big hit.

Another five-run frame in the sixth built the lead to 13-6, but Hoffner’s scored four times in the bottom of the inning and three more times in the seventh to force extras.

Goin' Postal proceeded to score three times in the eight to take a 16-13 lead.  Garrett Lewis led off with a triple and scored on a Basulto double.  Givanni Gomez capped the scoring for Postal with an RBI single.

Hoffner’s put up a last-gasp effort with two runs in the bottom of the frame.  Payne Vannice walked to open the inning but was forced out on a Jacob Hensley grounder.  Matthew Grubb singled with one out to bring the tying run to the plate, and Corbin Hoffner singled with twoaway to keep the rally alive before a groundout brought an end to the high-scoring affair.
