on drive

Company: Goin’ Postal
Liberty, 9754 N. Ash Ave., Kansas City; (816) 407-7773;
www.goinpostal.com.
Owners: Linda and Jim Sterling, husband and
wife. Linda is responsible for the day-to-day operations, as well as company
policies and future goals. “Without the support of my husband, the dream of
owning my own company would not be possible,” she said. “Besides having his
own full-time career, he helps at the store whenever possible and has taken
over most of the household chores.”
Opened: May 3.
What makes Goin’ Postal unique?
“We are an authorized shipper for FedEx, UPS, DHL and
USPS (U.S. mail and stamps). Having all the major carriers helps me give my
customers the best possible solution to their shipping needs. Other services
we offer include packaging, mailbox rental, greeting cards, eBay assistance,
fax and copy services, notary and lottery tickets.”
Why did you decide to go into business for yourself
and how long did it take you to start your business?
“I was unhappy with my job and I was searching the Net
and it popped into my e-mail. I searched it out in October 2005 and thought
it looked interesting. At the end of November, I traveled to the corporate
office for training and at that time started looking for a location to open
my store. My storefront in the new Highland Plaza Shopping Center had
numerous delays, so I was not able to start my tenant finish until April
2006.”
What worked in starting your own business?
“It takes dedication and commitment, as well as a
belief in your product. Having a background in accounting and management
helped me in evaluating the franchise and the day-to-day operations.”
What is your best advice for others hoping to start
their own businesses?
“You have to have that entrepreneurial spirit and
drive, as business ownership involves long hours with virtually no pay at
the beginning. Satisfaction comes from pride of ownership and watching your
business grow and become an integral part of the community it serves.”
Is there anything else you’d like to share related
to starting a business in the industry?
“As with any business, customer service is the key to
success. My motto throughout this whole process has been: If your mind can
conceive and your heart can believe, you will achieve. All the sacrifices
I’ve had to make seem very small against the sense of accomplishment I
feel.” |
