The husband and wife said they chose the shipping franchise based in Zephyrhills, Fla., because it's family-orientated and offers more support to its 290 stores than other chains.
The shipping store, one of five in California, opened April 2 in the Atwater Marketplace shopping center and gives residents the option to send packages through UPS, FedEx, DHL and U.S. Postal Service.
"Everyone's really pleased," 35-year-old Abraham Rego said. "(The store) gives Atwater some options."
Many Atwater residents drove to Merced to mail presents and merchandise because no one in the city contracted with any company but UPS, he said.
In addition to shipping, Goin' Postal takes passport photos, performs notary services, wires money and sells office supplies. It will have a ribbon cutting on May 9 and a grand opening on May 12.
The husband and wife of nine years have both worked in retail and customer service, and felt they could run their own business.
"It was (scary) in the beginning, but I had faith it'd work out," he said. "We could always go back to what we were doing before."
Monica Rego, 36, worked in Home Depot's shipping and receiving department for ten years and her husband was a branch manager for Nestle Waters.
Monique Dase, 25, walked around the Bellevue Road shopping center Monday afternoon with her 3-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter, remembering when the business park used to be a field she walked through as a kid.
Dase moved back from Las Vegas a couple months ago and said she's surprised by all the new businesses and homes.
As she bought a greeting card, she said she will probably ship most of her packages from the store because it's two blocks from her home.
"It's less time-consuming than fighting the lines at the post office," she said.
The Regos live in Denair and decided to start their business in Atwater because it has a small-town feel but is also growing.
"Here you still get to know your neighbors," Monica Rego said, "and everybody wants to help everybody, even business owners."
